The Second Half of the Ride

                                                      Some General Info...

The previous blog was my first blog attempt, and apparently I didn't realize that I am only allowed 20 pages on a blog. Now I will do a second blog and arrange it differently so that I don't get cut off  by the "Blog Gods" at Google.

                                                                    Day 23
                                                  Texas, from Wimberley to Bastrop

Thunder, lightening, and rain. That's what we woke up to this morning. We loaded up the truck in the rain, and just as I was trying to get Karen to start up, the lightening started up in earnest. We waited about a half hour and then then got started into a light rain, about the same as Saturday. After rolling through the outskirts of Wimberley, we started climbing through the rolling hills and out into the sunny but humid end of the hill country. The rolling hills gradually disappeared and by the time we got to Lockhart, it felt and looked much more like we were on a rolling plain. We passed many beautiful ranches and homes, saw a lot of Longhorn cattle grazing in pastures along the road, and had a herd of deer racing us alongside the road.

A Couple of the Texas Longhorns

In Lockhart, we took our first break at Black's barbeque. The meats there are some of the best anywhere ( brisket, pork ribs, beef ribs, and sausages - particularly the hatch chile sausage). It was a good lunch until we went out to resume our ride. Someone had been messing with Karen's bike and it was laying on the ground. Her raccoon tail that had been attached to the back of her helmet (we got matching tails for this ride) had been ripped off and stolen. That was enough of a bummer that I doubt if we will ever return there.

Karen and her beef rib.

Yes, she ate the whole thing.

Looks like she's in Heaven
After Lockhart, we rode on to Bastrop on route 20.  I looked at the map and realized that if we had foregone the pleasures of Lockhart, we could have saved 10 miles on today's ride. I need to pay more attention to the maps overall, not just the ACA maps. To anyone reading this blog and following this route, stick with route 21 - the road is good, the shoulder nice and smooth, and we had little traffic (though it was a Sunday morning).

Father got to all of our break stops today and we had a pretty good ride.

We settled in at the Day's Inn, got cleaned up, and saved a couple of bucks by having dinner at Whataburger.  That, followed by a quick stop at the H.E.B. market to replenish our snacks, and we settled for the night.
