Day 25 (Navasota to Shepherd, TX)

Happily riding down the road under a cool, overcast sky with occasional sprinkles to offset the humidity, when a voice from the cyclist across the road yells, "Are you Karen and I can't remember the guy's name?". This was about 7 miles west of Cold Spring, and the guy's name was Jeff (crazyguyonabike.com - journal Lost on Two Wheels) .  They had read some of each others' journals, and he left St.Augustine, Florida 23 days ago. He has been on the road about as long as we have, and it was fun to chat for a few minutes before the rain started to increase and we all took off toward our respective destinations.

This morning started out with a cloudy, overcast sky, and no rain with the temperature about 70+ degrees. Karen and I got on the road about 9AM, because my patched rear tire didn't hold and I had to change tubes this morning. The overcast sky kept temperatures down and the ride was very nice through the Sam Houston National Forest. We crossed over Lake Conroe in the Cagle Recreation Area, and realized that some of Texas is much nicer than the West Texas area around El Paso.

Lake Conroe, it looks the same on both sides of the bridge.

We stopped in Shepherd at the Hometowner Inn on the North end of town. Although the motel looks nice on the outside, the room had holes in the walls, the tile floors in the bathroom were dirty, and there was no TV remote and they could not accommodate us with a ground floor room. I would not recommend the place unless you find yourself stuck in Shepherd. The restaurant that the clerk sent us to was a little Mexican restaurant "by the four way stop sign". None of us could make out the name of the place, but Karen's food was too salty, and mine had no flavor, good or bad. Father said nothing about his meal.

As we wrap things up for the evening, it is raining steadily outside. I hope the weather shapes up by morning......
